Overview
MEGA Graphite is in the business of supplying high-purity, large-flake natural graphite to emerging product markets. These include graphite materials for mobile energy applications that include lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells; engineering materials for use in solar technologies, semiconductor manufacturing, electronic heat sinks, and powder metallurgy; and carbon additives for conductive coatings, plastics, paints and carbon fibers. Product pricing in these sectors is often set at the high end of the graphite market, and can range anywhere from $3,500 to $35,000 per metric tonne.
Strategy
The Company’s strategy for serving these markets is to establish a low-cost, vertically integrated operation that includes the ownership of natural graphite properties in stable political environments; the mining, processing and upgrading of natural graphite; and the development of branded MEGA products designed to meet current and future customer needs. The Company currently owns four key properties in Ontario and has signed a definitive agreement in the form of a Implementation Deed, with Stategic Energy Resources (SER) to acquire the Uley Project in Australia, one of the largest producing graphite mines in the world. This will permit MEGA Graphite to effectively serve both North American and Asian markets.
To achieve a low-cost production model the Company has adopted a combination of traditional graphite recovery methods including standard flotation techniques, as well as use of a portable dry milling system. In the case of its Ontario properties, ore is treated on site using as many as four portable systems to achieve pre-concentrates in the 75-90% range. The Company has determined that low-cost portable systems offer additional benefits that include improved recovery rates, and being environmentally friendly by reducing reliance on tailing ponds. Pre-concentrated material is then shipped to acentral upgrade facility, and/or external tolling operations for refinement to purities of 99% or better.
MEGA Graphite operates as a "green energy” company and will at all times use the best practices possible for milling, product production and the sale of products. This will include the use of renewable energy sources and conservation wherever possible; the most effective forms of water treatment; and sustainable practices that take all steps to retain and restore the natural environments.
A world-class team of industrial minerals mining, marketing and R&D professionals is driving all of the Company’s processes and plans. The Company is keenly aware of the importance of effective planning, marketing and teamwork in today’s hyper-competitive global marketplace and is confident that it will consistently execute a winning strategy that will exceed the expectations of its customers and all stakeholders of the Company.
Why Graphite?
The projected demand for natural graphite increasingly places it in the category of a critical strategic material in the world's resource supply. Current consumption is approximately 1.1 million metric tonnes per year. Growth in traditional and high-technology sectors, particularly areas such as the use of lithium-ion batteries in electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV and HEV) is expected to push this figure to well in excess of 1.5 million tonnes over the next five to ten years. Much of this supply, like rare earth metals, has traditionally come from China. Over the past two years China has dramatically increased internal consumption and imposed restrictions on all exports. This has created a distinct opportunity for MEGA Graphite to offer global customers an alternate, cost-effective and secure supply of high-quality graphite flake through its Canadian and Australian properties.
